Hawk Computer Based Training
Includes CAI, CBT and Emulation programmes for BAE SYSTEMS for a number of Hawk variants for overseas customers. Around 230 hours of Pennant CAI / CBT courseware, together with a Virtual Aircraft Training System (VATS), are used by the RAF for Lead in Fighter (Hawk / F18) training at Air Force bases in Australia. A similar programme is currently in development by Pennant for the South African Air Force (SAAF).
The courseware transfers system knowledge using Instructor-led, self–paced CBT and the VATS emulation. VATS provides free play diagnostic training through emulation of all aircraft systems. Each aircraft system, every system component, LRU, cable, connector, circuit breaker and wire is accurately modelled such that faults induced in particular systems generate realistic effects on the overall aircraft system. The virtual test equipments are accurate simulations of the actual aircraft test equipment that the student can connect to the appropriate test points and use to diagnose faults as on the real aircraft.

VATS allows maintenance engineers to work in free-play mode using the aircraft manuals to practice all normal maintenance and fault-finding tasks to 1st line level. Aircrew gain familiarisation with the aircraft systems, and cockpit displays and controls.
The Instructors Control Console allows the Instructor to present lessons in instructor-led mode, set self-paced lessons or induce fault diagnosis on the VATS emulation. Students can work independently or as a team. The Course Management System allows the instructor to set faults, monitor students progress and create training scenarios.
